After an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude that struck Nepal and the mid-Himalayas on April 25, travel via land is yet to resume in 2016. The Nepal-Tibet International border crossing at the Friendship highway remains CLOSED but other areas of Tibet are not affected and are OPEN for travelers.
Generally, the highway was utilized for operating Kailash tours as an entry and exit point but in the midst of 2015, the route received heavy damage in the 7.8 earthquake due to which the government has decided not to use the highway for any kind of traveling purposes. For now, it remains impossible to state when the overland border that connects Tibet and Nepal is likely to reopen. Nevertheless, Richa Tours is offering Kailash Manasarovar packages via Lhasa and Helicopter, which is equally safe and easy form of traveling to the magnificent Mt. Kailash.
For now, our Company has provided a brief itinerary of Kailash Manasarovar via overland. It will be a helpful guide for those who are wishing to travel via this route in the upcoming days. As soon as the Nepal-China government makes an official statement about the opening of the Friendship route, Richa Tours will make efforts to resume the package for interested travelers.
The 53 km Kailash circuit is the holiest of all Tibet’s Pilgrimages and the beacon, which draws most travelers to western Tibet. It is said that a Single parikarma erases the accumulated sins of a lifetimes, while 108 number of circumambulation will achieve Salvation or Nirvana.
