Trip Overview

The word ‘Mukti’ in Sanskrit is ‘salvation’ and the word ‘Nath’ means ‘god’. But the synthesis of these two words is much more than just a place of salvation or nirvana. It is an extremely spiritual sacred site for devout pilgrims that help them discover or attain ‘moksh’ from the cycle of birth and rebirth.

Located at an elevation of 3,710 meters, at the base of Thorong La Pass, Muktinath is considered a mystical centre for both Hindus and Buddhists. Thousands of devotees flock to this ancient shrine that radiates endless energy and helps pilgrims who are on a quest to uncover inner energy.

What attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world to the place of salvation is that it is one of the ancient temples of Lord Vishnu and is one of the eighth holiest places well known as Svayam Vyakta Ksetras. Additionally, the temple consists of a human-sized golden statue of Lord Vishnu and bronze images of several deities, a few of them, which are idols of Bhoodevi (Earth Goddess), goddesses Saraswati and Janaki, Garuda (the mount of the divine Vishnu), Luv and Kush (sons of Ram and Sita) and the Sapta Rishis. The consecrated shrine of Muktinath also includes a Buddhist Gompa where revered Buddhist nuns guide various forms of worship.
