Trip Overview

At 8586 meters, the third highest mountain of the world, this massive peak dominates the southern range of the Himalayas. Before Nepal opened its borders to the outside world in 1950, Kanchenjunga was possibly one of the greatest Nepalese mountains because it could be easily seen from the British hill stations of Darjeeling. It wasn’t until 1988 that trekking connoisseurs garnered curiosity in this particular area. Since then, it has virtuously gained upbeat reputation in the public world of trekkers as a mountain of Five Treasuries of Great Snows.

Passing through the sparsely inhabited area, the trekking route is drained by Tamur River that meets other rivers and as a result, numerous glaciers feed the watercourse. The trails are not very outlined and since the time of the British botanist, Joseph Hooker explored the region, little has changed since then. It should be kept in mind that the trekking routes are still very primitive and trekkers should be more than self-reliant in comparison to other trekking routes.
